Depuis la révolution de 1978, l'Iran vit sous des lois islamiques très strictes. Une loi interdit notamment toute représentation en public de musique occidentale. Le jazz, le rock, le hip-hop, le métal ont ainsi été formellement interdit par le gouvernement. Malgré les menaces d'emprisonnement et autres sanctions, de nombreux jeunes de Téhéran continue de défier l'autorité et enregistrent leur musique dans des studios underground. Ceux qui sont assez bon sont parfois signés par des maisons de disques étrangères et quittent le pays pour l'occident. Mais d'autres restent inflexibles, veulent rester vivre en Iran et essayer de continuer à écrire et jouer leur musique, malgré les conditions extrêmement difficiles. Travis Beard s'est rendu en Iran, pour voir à quoi cette scène musicale interdite ressemblait. Il a réussi à photographier plus de 8 groupes différents, des images rares qui nous donnent à voir comment s'organise la société iranienne en ces années de conflits et de tensions toujours plus vives.
