L’association Aïna World fut créée en 2001 par le photojournaliste Manoocher Deghati, dans le but d’apporter une formation dans les domaines de l'information et de la communication à l’Afghanistan. Le premier département né de cette ONG fut l’Institut de Photojournalisme Aïna. Un centre de formation axé autour de la reconstruction de l’industrie de la presse et des médias en Afghanistan. Au cours des 6 dernières années, Aïna Photo a formé plus de 60 étudiants à toutes les facettes du photojournalisme. « Nous essayons d’avoir des classes équilibrées, avec 50% de femmes et 50% d’hommes » explique le rédacteur en chef Travis Beard. « De la prise de vue à la retouche d’image en passant par la construction scénaristique et l’éthique de l’industrie des médias d’aujourd’hui, nos tuteurs et bénévoles s’efforcent de faire rentrer ce pays ravagé dans le circuit médiatique mondial du XXIème siècle. » Aïna Photo possède également une agence qui stocke et vend les milliers d’images prises par les photographes sur le site www.ainaphoto.com. Les profits des ventes sont reversés aux photographes et réinvestis dans l’Institut pour préparer les programmes de formation à venir. La dernière mission d’Aïna Photo est de trouver du travail pour ses étudiants. Les anciens élèves ont été placés dans des agences comme Reuters, AP, AFP et l’U.N. pour n'en citer que quelques unes. Actuellement, Aïna Photo est en train d’ajuster ses objectifs au marché international pour se positionner en tête des fournisseurs d’images d’Afghanistan faites par des Afghans.

The first classes of 2006 were conducted by Travis beard and Fardin Waezi in both english and Dari. Some 36 students were taught how to use a digital camera.

In Jalalabad the students run down the streets in a rush of excitement as they explore both the city and the art of photography.

Within the bazaar our presence is noticed by the mostly male population. this ids apparent because we have women dressed in modest clothing and using camera's. not a usual activity seen in Jalalabad.

As a social experiement, I asked one of the students to wear a burka and go back out into the streets and photograph. we found that she could work a lot more effectively with the burka on.
