A Polish team headed by Professor Jerzy Gassowski announced on the 3rd of November 2005, the discovery of Nicolas Copernicus’ skull, the great Polish astronomer. The theory of the Polish historian Sikorski was proved. Sikorski thought that Copernicus, who was also canon at the Frombork Cathedral should have been buried somewhere near the Saint Andrew alter, which he was devoted to. Today it is named the altar of the Saint Cross, found 4th from the right. The custom at the time was that the canons were buried under the altar that they took care of. The skull was reconstructed at the Cental Laboratory of Criminology of the Polish police. It shows a extraordinary resemblance to the portraits of Copernicus, notably those conserved at the Copernicus Museum in Torun.
