Comme sur les lignes de la main, l’Histoire de la capitale allemande se lit sur ses murs. Cette ville, coupée en deux pendant près de trente ans par « le mur de la honte », transpire chacune des périodes difficiles qu’elle a traversé au cours du XXème siècle. Le parti-pris d’un parcours nocturne vient encore accentuer cet aspect, dans une recherche de l’épure et de la simplification architecturale. Même vidée de ses habitants, les pierres parlent dans la pénombre des faibles éclairages urbains. Si Berlin a conservé des cicatrices du passé, elle change aujourd’hui radicalement de visage. Le vent de la modernité a soufflé sur les chantiers pour donner naissance aux quartiers d’affaires de l’Alexander Platz. La nouvelle gare centrale, véritable défi architectural, accueille les trains à grande vitesse sur plusieurs niveaux superposés, à l’image des strates de la ville que l’Histoire empile avec les années.
