My Car, My Life. Tuning Fever

Lourdes Segade

About 1.700 vehicles 'fought' this year for the 42.000m2 of Montmeló circuit, in Barcelona (Spain). Not anybody can show his car here. Selection process is tough and the spectacularity of the cars shown proves it. Close your mouth or you'll get flies in it. If one believes to know tuning and has never been to a meeting similar to Maxi Tuning Show can't have an idea about the scale of the phenomenon. Tuning is not only cars, owners who spend millions making their vehicles look beautiful and imaginative experts who tune the cars and make an art piece from each of them. Tuning is not only technology and power; not only colors and designs of heart attack or tricked cars that run faster. Tuning is more than that. It is a very concrete kind of music and a way of dancing and moving the body; a clothing style and a concrete relationship with the own body. It is a way of buying and mix with other people. It is, in fact, a way of life. The deafening noise of cars and motorbikes that run in the circuit mix with the maddening sound of reggaeton music: “Asesina, me domina… Janguea en carro, motora y limosina. Llena su tanque de adrenalina cuando escucha reggaeton en la cocina… A ella le gusta la gasolina (dame más gasolina)” ("It kills me, dominates me... Runs a car, a motorbike and a limousine. Fills her tank with adrenaline when she listens to reggaeton in the kitchen... She likes gasoline (give me more gasoline!)"), sings a lyrics that sounds thunderous while the vibration of the powerful sound system does not allow to keep the hand steady to take photos to the car. Tuning boys love to show off car and girl. And the girls are proud to show off inside these spectacular vehicles. Weekend at the disco, boys with tuned cars are more attractive to their made up eyes. In the shows, though, girls are secondary actresses while cars attract all attention from people used to it and also from beginners. Even some famous actor takes for a walk around with his mouth wide open, maybe thrilled, like every one who is not accustomed to this kind of aesthetic? sign. On stage two impressive women move their hips accompanied by their "papito" (daddy), as said by the song they dance. Close to them, two hothead guys show off a phyton molurus snake on the cover of their Opel Calibra Turbo painted in orange and black. They belong to the Oxid Tuning Club. Christopher, the snake, is shitting in their trousers. Lots of girls come to see the animal from a closer distance and they end to talk to the boys and taking some photos with them. Might the cars be only an excuse? The truth is that diabolical, hawaian, ranger, wild or luxurious all type of cars have a place in this show. Come in and decide which one is yours.
