Les mapuches sont un peuple du sud du Chili et constituent environ 10% de la population actuelle du Chili. Seul peuple d’Amérique Latine à ne pas avoir été vaincu par la colonisation espagnole, ils ont obligés celle-ci à signer avec ses autorités traditionnelles des traités reconnaissant comme territoires autonomes les territoires s’étendant du sud du fleuve Bio-Bio jusqu’au nord de l’île de Chiloé. En 1810 le Chili est indépendant, et s’intéresse de près aux territoires mapuches. Après une guerre très meurtrière, les Mapuches perdent leur indépendance en 1881. On les relègue alors dans des « reducciones », (des réserves), leur culture est niée, et leurs traditions et leur langue sont interdites. Actuellement les relations entre les Mapuches et le gouvernement chilien sont toujours très tendues. Les multinationales et les latifundistes ont récupéré des milliers d’hectares, la déforestation menace et les plantations commerciales d’eucalyptus et de pins affaiblissent le sol. L’environnement des mapuches est menacé mais aussi leur culture, dévalorisée par rapport à la culture occidentale ambiante. Enfin, les problèmes économiques auxquels ils sont confrontés obligent de nombreux Mapuches à partir gagner leur vie à la capitale, Santiago et ce depuis quelques générations.
