These photographs are a series of portraits of French families as they eat their evening meal at the dinner table in their homes. This work was produced throughout France, in both urban and rural spheres. It shows the daily life of French people and presents: - the habits and dietary practices of families - religious identity via interior decoration - the social, ethnic and cultural diversity of families. It provides a unique glimpse into the privacy of French households.

Stéphanie Lacombe / Picturetank LAS0121769 Solange, a hundred years old (on the left) is Dédé's mother, and a retired postal worker. Maria, Dédé's wife, has lived with her mother-in-law since Solange's husband died 30 years ago. During the 2nd world war Dédé hid an english paratrooper in this house who had come over to help prepare the Normandy landings. No-one in the village ever found out. The family has been awarded various medals by the Defence Ministry for acts of bravery.
